Implants are considered to be the best way to restore one or even all missing teeth in the mouth. They feel almost like natural teeth and are considered to be a very conservative approach (although surgery is required), as there is no need to drill any adjacent teeth, as done for a bridge restoration. The minor surgery required is performed with local anesthesia, similar to what is done for a simple filling. Minimal pain and postoperative complications are involved (usually some swelling for a few days and need for pain killers for 24 – 48 hours). The placement of the implant is usually easier than the extraction of the tooth to be replaced. After waiting for some time for the implant to integrate with the tissues, an esthetic porcelain restoration is fabricated and placed on the implant.

With new technologies offered in our clinic, in selected cases, we can offer immediate placement and loading of your implant (the same day the tooth is extracted you leave the clinic with the implant and a temporary restoration fitted).

In patients that have no teeth and cannot get used to dentures, placing 2 or 4 implants can greatly improve the stability of the denture and thus the comfort of the patient and the chewing ability, without the cost of fixed porcelain restorations. Especially at the lower jaw, where the bone will absorbe fast after the extraction of the teeth and the retention of the denture will be even worse, the implant supported overdenture is especially recommmended and changes dramatically the quality of life of the patient. At the upper jaw, placing 4 implants allows the fitting of a horse shoe overdenture without covering the roof of the mouth.

A panoramic radiograph and a thorough exam in our clinic is needed before we determine the exact treatment plan for your implants. In some cases we will need a cone beam CT scan to plan the surgery properly.
